Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month

Within north east Scotland's life sciences cluster, Aberdeen-based biotech companies are leading global scientific research and development into early diagnosis, intervention and effective treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

Using advanced EEG technology, WellBrain UK provides a non-invasive method for tracking brain signalling and function to detect early signs of dementia, opening the door for timely and effective intervention strategies.

TauRx has developed an oral disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer's, with transformative potential for patients, and has successfully conducted four Phase 3 clinical trials in Aberdeen.

WellBrain’s CEO, Professor Bettina Platt, and TauRx’s CBO and COO, Glenn Corr, on how they are benefiting from the ecosystem in the north east and support from ONE Life Sciences.

Professor Platt said:

"Opportunities created by ONE Life Sciences for our WellBrain entrepreneur journey have opened the door to many relevant training programmes.

“Now that we are firmly on a spin out track, the personal and professional support continues, which is greatly appreciated. Relevant business training and the amazing number of new contacts have made our transition from an academic idea to a serious company possible.”

Glenn Corr, TauRx added:

“The North-east has a rich history of innovation across multiple industries from healthcare to oil and gas to football, and TauRx is proud to be part of the next wave of innovators making strides across the life sciences industry.

“In order to run four global phase 3 clinical trials from Aberdeen, as well as submit our potential oral treatment for Alzheimer’s disease to the MHRA, TauRx has had to build its own ecosystem. But it’s one we’d like to grow further and share with others. The collaborative nature of the life sciences organisations born here has helped us – and many others – flourish, and together we can make it thrive even more.”
